here’s a weird new development

UMKC voice mail is now automatically emailed to the recipient in the form of a WAV file. I’m not thrilled with this, but they say it can’t be changed. So…

…if you want to collaborate in some of the ephemeral toybox projects that Weez and I have been doing, call my office phone at 816-235-2559 and leave whatever sounds you like. Please wait until after 5 p.m. Central Time so my phone’s not ringing off the hook while I’m in the office.

  1. George, the newly added feature to the voice mail system could be a fine pedagogical tool.
    Dictation and transcription
Student group work. Performing a poem with typographical niceties (e.g. one by William Carlos Williams or one by Adrienne Rich). Describing a poem with such use of spacing or one with homonyms (read/red; reed/read).
I am willing to wager that the limitations of the software can provide opportunities for developing student appreciation for the “materiality of the text” or delight in the potential of approaching “text as score”.

  2. I think that’s a great idea, Francois.
Meanwhile, what’s telling is that, one by one, my colleagues are noticing that something funny is going on with their voicemail. It would have been nice for this spiffy new communications system to have been introduced with a little more … what’s the word I’m looking for? ah, yes … communication.
