three little words

What’s your New Year’s resolution, dear reader?

Mine is “Let it go.” I’m going to do my best to make that phrase the overarching theme of my life in 2008. The years 2002 to 2006 were pretty rocky for me. In particular, 2006 was my annus horribilis. For each past disappointment, frustration, or betrayal, I want to repeat my new mantra, “let. it. go.”

Ted Leo, “Dancing in the Dark”

Fortunately, 2007 has been much, much better. I am happier than I’ve ever been in my adult life. I’m in love with a fantastic person. My neighborhood is the kind of place I’ve always dreamed of living. My students and colleagues are great. I plan to start focusing more on my future than my past.

And I hope to start using this blogging venue to write more substantive posts, the way I used to back when academic blogging still seemed…how you say?…innovative.

  1. Excellent idea, George. Very appropriate to my life at the moment – the latter half of my 2007 seems to be your 2006. So I’ll be joining you in the “” camp.

Cheers for a happy new year (which for some of us began at the solstice :) ).

  3. I am so glad that you are in a place where things are looking up.

A small word of caution, though: as I am a person who tends toward rumination myself, I turned those very three words into both weapons to hurl at future hurts and sutures to close up old wounds–neither of which worked very well because I picked up the mantra because someone told me it would help me stop hurting–and ohmygod, growth is a painful process.

I am actually reading a very good book on the subject right now by Lama Surya Das, called *Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be.*

I am coming to believe that it is not the putting aside or letting go of old hurts but the complete acceptance of them that moves us toward healing. (Another fantastic book: *Eat, Pray, Love* by Elizabeth Gilbert).

Long comment short, I am very happy that you’ve found some peace. Best of luck in ’08!!

  4. I very much endorse the “let it go” idea. It’s harder than it would seem, isn’t it? My intentions (borrowing that word from Scrivener) for 2008 revolve around hiking and gratitude, I think.

Glad to see you’re blogging again–but how come your blog looks so funny on my browser (yards and yards of white space up top before the content shows up)? (Maybe, in fact, you have been blogging all this time but I never scrolled down far enough below the white space.)
