faith

What role does your faith play in your decisions?

Bush talks about the importance of prayer, but then turns to the importance of tolerating diverse religions. An admirable sentiment, but I think the underlying assumption behind the question is that Christ preached a message of peace. Bush is answering it as if the underlying assumption is that he’s a religious bigot.

If Kerry uses the word “respect” one more time, I’m going to hurl. Also makes a nod toward religious tolerance. Students snicker at his reference to being blessed by Native Americans. “As president I will always respect everybody’s right to practice as they choose, or not to practice, if that’s their choice.”

Hmm. The last part of this statement seems like something that deserves more discussion in this forum.

Nope. They’re on to something else, now.

affirmative action

Ouch. Kerry says that Bush hasn’t met with the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus, or any of the Civil Rights leaders in America. If our president won’t reach out to include others, what chance do we have to make progress?

Bush: That’s not true that I haven’t met with the Congressional Black Caucus.

Um….good… try?

backdoor draft

“Is there any relief that can be offered to these people and their families?”

Kerry: “This is a reflection of the bad judgment this president has exercised…Our military is overextended…I’ve proposed adding two active duty divisions” And special forces to take the pressure off the National Guard and the Reserve. Returns to a common theme: “America is strongest when we are working with real alliances.” Emphasizes the cost of the war and finishes with a reference to Bush “taking his eye off Osama Bin Laden.”

Bush: The best way to provide relief for our troops is to succeed in Iraq. Poeple I’ve talked to, their spirits were high. They didn’t feel their service was a back door draft: they felt it was an opportunity to serve their country. Turns to his recurrent point about American independence: we should not have to ask permission of other countries. Argues that this is Kerry’s position.

Really? No soldier told you that they thought you were doing a bad job? I wonder why.

bush on education

When asked about the minimum wage, Bush starts talking about the No Child Left Behind Act, emphasizing the importance of standards, and never addresses the question. Two responses:

  1. So…the reason people don’t earn more money is because they are stupid?
  2. Ixnay on the andardstay. People know about your record in school.

He quotes someone saying, “Reading is the new civil right.” Mr. President, why don’t you exercise your civil rights?
